Was that a haggis?

London is currently a tropical 3 degrees as I sit in my lovely warm kitchen on a Sunday evening. And strangly enough it feels quite warm. I know an insane thought but having had a super lovely but oh so chilly weekend in Aberdeen I am feeling pretty toasty warm.

I have had a lovely weekend in the coastal Scottish town Aberdeen famous for ….. steak, cows, oil and all other famous Scottish things I guess like whisky, tarten and hair raising warfare. We went for a gorgeous but rather frosty walk yesterday in the snow and ice near Balmoral and popped into a distillery in search of a hot toddy (sadly there was only whisky for sniffing!), partook in a freshly made Haggis for dinner with potatoes, beetroots and swede. All rather brilliant.

Haggis is quite possibly the most anti-vegitarian meal ever. I mean it is honestly made of all manner of bits and parts of sheep. However, when boiled together with all other sorts of bits and pieces tastes rather splendid. However, the thing I truly love is the myth that surrounds it – fancy spotting a creature a bit like a rabbit with two legs longer than the other two legs. Although quite sensibly it is so it can move evenly on the hills – but is of course sentenced to walking in a single direction for its entire life!

We also visited the beach which was beautiful, a rather impressive castle famous for its role in saving the crown of Scotland.

However, most importantly is that I caught up with friends, saw where they live and sipped plenty of red wine.

Working the routine – 7 weeks in

I have been back at ‘work’ for the last 7 weeks or so.

My ambitious plan of having more than one job is proving to be busy – no surprise there I guess – with the two projects having deliverables around the same time. Who would have predicted that little surprise! It does mean I am a busy busy bee. This I have got use to over the last 18 months so I know I can cope.

However, what I find odd is that I have to work between certain hours and mostly in the same spot. I am use to a completely different, slightly freer way of working. One where I can go for a run, shower and then work some more. One where I can catch up with friends at strange moments, not have to squeeze them in over lunch.  One where I can work in the coffee shop or in the library.

So what I am wondering is – are all the restriction I now face the result of convention, do I actually have to comply? No one has told me that I have to be there between 8 and 6 for instance? In fact no one has said that I need to sit at my desk.

My plan tomorrow is to push things a little. I am going to take my computer into work and I am going to try different spots………. maybe even the local coffee shop!

hmmmmm does that make me a rebel?
